Color
Diamonds range
in color from icy white to a light warm summer yellow. Diamonds are graded on a
color scale that was established by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA)
in Carlsbad, California. The color scale ranges from D (colorless) to Z.
They are a letter grade. There is no A, B, or C.
Warmer colored diamonds
which range from K-Z color are particularly desirable when set in yellow
gold. The other or more favorable end of the spectrum which is the icy winter
whites D-J look absolutely stunning when set in white gold or platinum.
Color differences are very subtle and it is very difficult to see the
difference between one color grade such as a G or a H. Therefore, colors
are graded under controlled lighting conditions and are compared to a master set
behind a white card for the best accuracy.
The truly colorless stones,
graded in the Colorless range of D, E, and F are the highest priced and most
treasured for their rarity. The Color selection, however, ultimately comes down
to personal taste.
